About the Position
A range of possible engineering positions is available in the Wet Services and Fire department (otherwise known as the Public Health Department). Candidates are to have the following general qualities:
- Five to ten years relevant experience in the Wet Services and/ or fire engineering sector.
- Experience in the consulting industry within the building services sector
- Degree/ Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
- Registered as a professional with the ECSA (preferred but not essential)
- Experience within the building industry in the Middle East is a plus
- It is preferred that the candidate is experienced in both the Wet Services and Fire Services sectors, but individuals with experience in only one of the two will also be considered.
- The candidate needs to be able to demonstrate his/ her relevant experience in the Wet Services sector in amongst the other categories:
- Good understanding and capable of designing piped hydraulic systems (complete head loss calculations including frictional losses, gravity head losses etc.)
- Good understanding and capable of calculating energy losses/ gains from piped systems.
- Sound knowledge in good practice principals for pipe routing throughout buildings (water
supply & drainage) - Experience in building domestic water flow demand calculations using fixture unit/ diversity methods
- Experience in estimating storage volumes for potable water & domestic hot water storage
vessels using prescriptive codes - Experience in designing central hot water systems with multiple circulating loops
- Experience in domestic water booster pump selection and understanding pump duty curves
- Experience in soil and waste drainage hydraulic calculations using loading unit/ diversity
methods - Good understanding of wastewater behaviour inside piped systems in terms of over & under pressures (siphonage) and noise
- Experience in designing wastewater sumps including pumps and their relevant control
philosophy - Experience in rainwater drainage hydraulic calculations using rainfall intensity curves to
calculate runoffs etc. - Experience in designing rainwater sumps including pumps and their relevant control
philosophy - Experience in designing grease separators and oil interceptors using prescriptive codes
- Knowledge in terms of the following codes are preferred:
o BS 12056, "Gravity drainage systems inside buildings"
o BS 6700, "Design, installation, testing and maintenance of services supplying water
for domestic use within buildings and their curtilages"
o BS 1825, "Grease separators & Oil separators"
The candidate needs to be able to demonstrate his/ her relevant experience in the Fire Services sector In amongst the other categories: - Sound knowledge in good practice principals for pipe routing throughout buildings (sprinklers, hose reels, hydrants etc.)
- Experience in classifying sprinkler hazards in terms of their occupancy
- Experience in positioning of sprinklers heads complying with requirements of prescriptive
codes - Understanding principals in identifying the hydraulically most demanding area in a fire
protection system - Good understanding and capable of designing piped hydraulic systems (complete head loss calculations including frictional losses, gravity head losses etc.)
- Experience in placement of fire hydrants, fire hose reels and other fire safety related
equipment according to the guidelines of prescriptive codes - Experience in fire safety booster pump selection, pump arrangement and understanding
pump duty curves - Experience in calculating water storage volumes for the purposes of firefighting
- Good understanding of gaseous fire suppression systems
- Good understanding of foam fire suppression systems
- Knowledge in terms of the following codes are preferred:
o NFPA13, "Installation of sprinkler systems"
o NFPA14, "Installation of standpipe and hose systems"
o NFPA 20, "Installation of stationary pumps for fire protection"
o NFPA 22, "Water tanks for private fire protection"
o NFPA 101, "Life safety code"
