It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health and vaccinology.
This is done through pioneering, multi-disciplinary research; responsive technical support and innovation in health services; and evidence-based policy development and advocacy with national, regional and global stakeholders.

Our Key Populations Programme seeks a Technical Advisor to join our senior leadership team. 


An exciting position for a Research Clinician has arisen in Wits RHI’s Ward 21 Clinical Research Site (CRS).
The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work on several studies which include: (i) a randomized clinical trial (RCT) to evaluate the safety and efficacy a broadly neutralizing monoclonal antibody in reducing acquisition of HIV infection, (ii) an phase 1/2 evaluating the safety and pharmacokinetics of the combination broadly neutralizing antibodies, 3BNC117-LS-J and 10-1074-LS-J, in African populations, (iii) an RCT evaluating the safety and efficacy of long-acting injectable carbotegravir compared to daily oral Truvada for pre-exposure prophylaxis in HIV-uninfected women and (iv) an RCT to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a single, oral, dose of zoliflodacin compared to a combination of a single intramuscular dose of ceftriaxone and a single oral dose of azithromycin in the treatment of patients with uncomplicated gonorrhoea.


Main purpose of the job



  • To recruit, screen and provide clinical management to participants in clinical trials according to study protocols.

Key performance areas



  • Set up and maintenance of trial documentation required by regulatory authorities.

  • Development and ongoing revision of standard operating procedures (SOPs) compliant with sponsor and CRS guidelines.

  • Screen and enroll eligible patients in accordance with study protocol and ethical guidelines.

  • Clinical assessment, treatment and/or referral of study participants.

  • Initiate, maintain and strengthen referral systems via direct interaction and assist in the establishment of Memorandums of understanding (MOUs) as required by the study protocol/s.

  • Conduct regular liaison with the laboratory regarding the interpretation of diagnostic test results.

  • Capture patient data on the Case Report Forms.

  • Quality control of case report forms with respect to clinical activities.

  • Review patient vitals and other study-related results.

  • Complete source notes and patient logs.

  • Treat opportunistic infections diagnosed.

  • Report any adverse events and follow-up on patients.

  • Conduct follow up on participants who have been admitted to the hospital

  • Contribute to the writing of grant proposals, protocols and scientific manuscripts.

  • Produce monthly progress reports

  • Attend meetings as required.

  • Engage and meet with sponsors and monitors as required.

  • Attend to staffing requirements and administration.

  • Perform and facilitate performance development and assessments.

  • Identify substandard performance by team members and take necessary corrective action.

  • Promote harmony, teamwork and sharing of information.

  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management.


Required minimum education and training



  • MBBCh degree or equivalent.


Required minimum work experience



  • Minimum 2 years of which 1 should be in a research environment.


Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities



  • Experience working in a donor funded organization.

  • Post graduate qualification in Public Health / Epidemiology or in the process of obtaining qualification.

  • Experience in Reproductive Health desirable.

  • Experience in writing donor proposals, protocols and scientific journals.

  • Certification in HIV Management and good clinical practice.

  • Well organized, ordered, systematic and analytical.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

  • Assertive, confident and adaptable.

  • Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines.

  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Display a concern for patients and willingness to respond to patients’ needs and requirements.

  • Able to prioritize own workload, take initiative (pro-active) and work to tight deadlines.

  • Self-motivated with a high regard for work ethic, values and integrity.
