A Medical Research and Development Scientist/Biomedical Engineer (24 Months FTC) vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium in Parktown - Johannesburg.

Background


Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences.
WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives.
In addition WHC offers a range of products and services to the Academics conducting these activities in order to assist with the management thereof.


Main Purpose of the job



  • The Department of Molecular Medicine and Haematology of the University of the Witwatersrand, School of Pathology, Faculty of Health Science Johannesburg, South Africa, a syndicate of the WITS Health Consortium, is seeking a Research and Development Scientist and/or Biomedical Engineer

  • This position involves working in a team of pathologists, scientists, program managers and biomedical engineers who manage a portfolio of innovative technologies to improve HIV and TB patient healthcare

  • The candidate will be required to evaluate these new solutions (molecular diagnostics, point of care test, mobile apps for result return and linkage to care) and provide recommendations for implementing into the national testing program

  • This position is in an academic environment providing the candidate an opportunity to further their scientific and academic career


Location



  • Wits Medical School, Parktown


Key performance areas



  • Develop evaluation protocols

  • Conduct evaluations against reference testing in the laboratory

  • Perform data analysis and compile results report

  • Write and present scientific reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals and abstract driven conferences


Required minimum education and training



  • MSc in a scientific or Biomedical engineering discipline


Additional education, work experience and personal abilities



  • Ability to problem solve

  • Ability to translate technical information to non-engineering team members

  • Laboratory experience focused on global health priority diseases and expertise in molecular diagnostics

  • Experienced in coding and statistical programs such as R, Python, Stata and MatLab

  • Experience in project management and translational science (putting science into action)

  • Experience in Good Clinical Laboratory Practice

  • Experience in presentation at scientific forums and good publication record

  • Ability to travel to clinical sites and collaborating sites internationally
